Archaeology Magazine has included the Neolithic settlement of Karakhantepe in the list of the 10 most important archaeological finds of the year — and put it on the cover!
Where is it? Near Sanliurfa, not far from the famous Gebeklitepe.
When? The settlement dates back to the Pre—Ceramic Neolithic period, about 12,000 to 10200 years ago.
Why is this important? Karahantepe forces scientists to rewrite history:
How did the sedentary lifestyle come about?
How were the first complex societies formed?
What role did Anatolia play in this?
The discovery was a new step towards understanding where and how civilization originated. And Turkey is once again at the center of world archaeology!
